Condition: Fair. Pages clean and not stained, no extraneous marks. Binding good; hinges intact, 1909 dedication and bookstore stamp on first white page - see scan.

Brown full cloth boards, black, orange, and gold cover design and spine titles, moderate shelf wear, rub, spine color weak. Cover depicts Lake Superior steamer passing the Apostle Islands. Interestingly, the design features two caduceus emblems, most often associated with medicine.

A compilation of several contributions. Contents: "The Great Lakes; Life-Savers, Old and Young; Niagara; The Ride of a Hundred Miles; A Little White Steamer, A Man in Gray, and Twenty Thousand Ships; In a Forest Aflame; A Boys Recollection of the Great Chicago Fire; Dog Teams and Sledges in Michigan; and, Chicago."

Features several unique turn-of-the-century pieces covering a variety of aspects of the Great Lakes region. From Wisconsin and Chicago to Lake Superior and Niagara Falls near Buffalo, New York, to mushers in tow with their dogs pulling a sled, the lore and unique qualities of the largest freshwater bodies in the world, are warmly and truthfully portrayed in this volume. Several wonderful photo and illustration plates depict great ships, commerce, recreation, the Chicago fire, and the culture and people of the time and region.

This is a rare work not often offered for sale, with this a very presentable copy. The only copy we could find is offered in lesser condition by a pro bookseller at $650, so this one may not be available for very long.
